2012-01-11 Last year Maine enacted Public Law 58 addressing who can access birth, marriage and death records and allows genealogists to obtain a researcher card --for a fee --so they do not have to wait to 75-50-50 years to obtain the records. Marriage applications were not included in this bill. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services had a bill introduced this year that addressed marriage applications LD 1627 Currently, there is no similar provision for genealogists and obtaining the researcher card or amending last year's bill to add marriage applications into the existing statute. A hearing has been scheduled by the Joint Standing Committee on Health and Human Services for LD1627 "An Act Regarding the Filing of Birth, Death and Marriage Data" Thursday, January 26, 2012 1:00PM, Room 209, Cross State Office Building in Augusta, Maine. As more information becomes available, it will be posted to this forum.
