More than George Washington's Letter on Religious Freedom For American Jewry Print E-mail
2011-10-17

Many of us are aware of U.S. first President George Washington's  letter on
assuring religious freedom to American Jews, " ...America would give to
bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance..." The article in the
Forward talks of the early Jewish congregations' letters to President
Washington which resulted in his famous reply as well other historical
documents of the times.

The article also mentions early Jewish settlers of the 1700's and in Georgia
(Congregation Mikve Israel in Savannah-third oldest Jewish congregation the
US) most being Sephardic had to flee Georgia because of the threat of attack
by Spanish soldiers, leaving the Ashkenazi congregants.  The article also
talks of letters from Presidents Jefferson, Madison, Franklin Roosevelt and
Nixon as part of the Savannah Jewish Archives along with other interesting
documents--of which some of the originals are lost.  Click here.
