The Columbus (Ohio) Jewish Historical Society (CJHS) has been doing outreach
to the smaller Jewish communities in central Ohio, e.g. Zanesville, Marion,
Springfield, Newark and Circleville, for many years. Because each community
is different, we planned activities based on the interest of each community.
Our outreach activities include presentation about what the CJHS does,
visits to sites of Jewish interest in the small communities and visits to
the Jewish cemeteries. In all cases we ehave ncouraged the communities to
have a plan for the preservation and long term storage of their records and
Jewish artifacts within the community.

In today's (July 19, 2011) Jewish Daily Forward there is a story about
small Jewish Communities across the United States trying to stay afloat.  As
genealogists we should be aware and concerned as the history of the Jews in
the towns,  cemeteries, synagogues, the history of synagogue activities (
Bar and Bat Mitzvah's, weddings, etc) are all part of tracing the history
of our ancestors. Click here.
