IAJGS Conference Management Seminars Print E-mail
The key to any successful genealogical society is to attract, serve
and retain those who desire to trace and connect to their ancestral heritage.
For this reason the IAJGS is sponsoring a panel of researchers with varied
experiences and extensive background in educating, motivating, and mentoring
beginners.
Subject: Involving the Youth  S-402
The IAJGS Management Seminar conducted at every conference brings in a
professional with a particular expertise to assist leaders of JGS's in
developing and maintaining their organizations. This event will be held
on Sunday, August 14, 2:15 PM - 5:00 PM.

The presenter is the D. Joshua Taylor from the New England Historic
Genealogical Society addressing the topic: "Attracting the Younger
Generation," S-402 . The future of our genealogical societies depends
upon attracting new audiences, including younger generations of
genealogists and family historians. Explore methods to "reach-out"
beyond your doors to create unique and enticing programs for those
under the age 25. This workshop includes interactive discussions,
a hands-on planning session while offering a multitude of ideas for
your organization.
Subject: Affordable Creative Programming
Programming is the crux of a successful society. With concerns of
dwindling membership, it is the creative programming that attracts
new members and retains the current membership.

The IAJGS management workshop, Dynamics of Innovative Programming,
will address ways to have affordable (very important in this day of reduced dues
income)and creative programming whether you are a small, medium or a large
JGS. Those attending will be able to exchange ideas on what works and what
doesn't on programming ideas, how to find speakers, reducing programming
costs, virtual speakers (podcasts and webinars) and publicity for the programs.
Publicity goes hand in hand with programming. A society can have the best
program and speaker but if no one knows about the program, no one attends.

Society leaders involved with programming and publicity should attend the
IAJGS Management Session by Jan Meisels Allen, IAJGS Director-at-large and
President of and chairperson of the program committee of JGS Conejo Valley
and Ventura County (JGSCV). Jan has been involved with JGS programming with
JGSCV for 6 years and before then, as the VP of programming of JGSLA for
4 years. The session W-101, Dynamics of Innovative Programming is scheduled
on Wednesday August 17, 8:00 AM- 9:15 AM.
Subject: Excite the Beginner with Success Th-104
Establish a program to assist beginners to have successes.
You have a short span of time in which to "hook" newcomers to a society
with successful research experiences. They are then disposed to contribute
to on-going society projects, volunteer efforts, and other opportunities
to serve. Thu Aug. 18 / 8:00 - 9:15 AM

Subject: Ethical Dilemmas
Anyone involved in family research will, sooner or later, face ethical
dilemmas such as: do we share sensitive family information, do we include
in our Jewish family tree individuals who have converted, do we cite all
internet sources, how much of our family tree do we give to other researchers
and what do we do if we find much of our own tree being used by someone else
on the web?

A session in Washington D.C. will explore how to resolve such dilemmas not
only for ourselves but how to help others resolve such situations. A number
of cases will be presented and attendees will be encouraged to give cases
they have experienced or know about and a lively discussion should ensue.
This session will be presented by Anne Feder Lee, IAJGS Immediate Past
President. It scheduled for Thursday from 2:15 - 3:30 p.m.
