2011-04-26 Dear Galitizianers (and those who love Krakow): For those of you planning to attend the IAJGS Conference this summer (August 14-19, 2011) we have a terrific slate of Galician-themed programming taking place. Gesher Galicia will be at the SIG Fair on Sunday 2P - 5P, along with our special guest, Mr. Jakub Nowakowski, the director of the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow, to answer your questions on Polish and Galician research. There will be many other programs throughout the week. Our SIG meeting will be at 11:00AM on Monday, August 15, to be followed by our luncheon. Even if you relatives didn't come from Galicia, if you are interested in travel to Krakow, Poland, you'll want to attend this presentation where Jakub and I will take you on a multi-media tour of this beautiful city: 12:30PM – 2:00PM - "A Tour of Jewish Krakow: Past, Present & Future" Jews have lived in Krakow, one of the largest centers in Poland/Galicia, since the 12th century and their history is a long and complicated one. Today Kazimierz -- the heart of Jewish Krakow -- is a thriving district of cultural festivals, museums, synagogues, antique shops, restaurants and bars. There a noticeable resurgence of Jewish culture and -- more importantly -- Jewish population. Join us for a virtual tour of this reborn and re-imagined Krakow, from the first days of Jewish settlement, through the unimaginable years of WWII, to this present-day tourist destination with its new JCC and a Disneyland-like "Schindler Factory Museum," and into a future of what will become an authentically Jewish Krakow. You'll view video footage of what Krakow is like today, along with learning the historical perspective from Jakub, who was born in Kazimierz. This item must be purchased separately from your conference registration. Although the early bird discount is up in a few days, luncheons can be added during the months ahead. In the next few weeks we'll be previewing more of the Galician-focused talks taking place in Washington, DC in August.
