Located in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Family History Library is the largest genealogical library in the world. It is run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), but it is open to anyone, regardless of religion. The collection consists of almost two million reels of microfilm, over 400,000 microfiche and about 260,000 books. The FHL has about 1600 branch libraries (known as Family History Centres) in cities around the world. By going to your local Centre, you have access to numerous indices and permanent microfilm. You can request (for a small fee) microfilm to be sent from Utah for a period of from two weeks to six months. The microfilm must be viewed at the local FHC or at the Toronto Reference Library. Each FHC has different service hours, so check before visiting. As well, you must pre-book time to use microfiche and film readers. Space is usually limited. For the location of the Family History Centre in your area consult the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Web site or call 1-800-346-6044. The Centres may charge for the ordering of the film and will not answer mailed inquiries. Also, the Toronto Reference Library has borrowing privileges with the FHL. |
